One of my favourite books of the year was Battle Royale by Houshun Takami. Set in authoitarian Japan, 42 Junior High school students are stranded on an island, electronically collared and each given a weapon. If they’re caught on the wrong part of the island at the wrong time of day, their collar explodes. The object of the game is to kill off your classmates until there is only one left standing. If more than one is still alive at the appointed time, all remaining collars go off. This had me hooked for two days of reading at every available moment. There is also a film of the same name Battle Royale, which sticks closely to the book as well as a graphic novel. (I’ve bought this for friends). So, click on the links if you want to pick these up.
